On top of the U there is a foam padding, it allows for a more comfortable seating as well as giving the U a better grip when using it upside down

This small pocket is used to store whatever the user needs while sitting on the U

The leather handle on the side allows the user to comfortably pull the U uspide down

This sitting plank has a sticking out part that makes turning around on the U easier

The hook is to hang up items, like baskets and bags

There are 4 wheels placed under the U to roll around while sitting on it. When the U is placed upside down, the wheels are on the top, and the U can't roll away while it is used in support mode.

The U is a multifunctional product that was designed for a person with muscle disease to assist her in getting up from the ground. The U provides a pitstop while getting up so the user does not have to perform the action all at once. When the person using the U is up from the ground, the U can be turned around to function as a stool with wheels. So the user can roll around while sitting on the stool.

For module 7 of the study Industrial Design Engineering at the University of Twente the students were asked to create a tool that helps a participant with a disability.

To design this tool it was important that the group got to know the participant better. This started with doing research on the disease of the participant, after which an interview was held. From that interview the problem was defined.

During the design phase different designs were created and presented to the participant. There was held a co-design session that helped the participant to give their input for the design and help the group pick the right concept. After some more ideation on that concept was done a rough prototype was made to test its function and again communicate with the participant about the updated design. Finally the real prototype was made and all the work could be reflected.
Throughout this website you can read more about the participant and you can see how the product was made.
