Co-Design

The co-design was a collaborative process that enabled together with the stakeholders to figure out what were the desired characteristics of a future product. This approach ensures that the needs and wants of Linda, in this particular case, are met.

Day off

On a day off Linda goes to the couch which is surrounded by things she can use. Like her laptop stand. The couch is too low so it takes a little longer to get up.
If she has nothing to do she will take up on one of her hobbies, like spin yarn on her spinning wheel.

Sitting

She does lots of things while sitting down. Like doing the laundry and cooking. When she sits in the kitchen it can be hard to get something out of the oven. The kitchen stool is too high and she cannot safely reach down.
For the laundry she uses a folding chair from the Ikea, while for cooking she uses a higher stool.
Side note: the kitchen stool was a bit full of things and she also mentioned that something that looked like a table could go wrong, because she can store a lot of stuff on it and therefore not use it as a stool anymore.

Moving

When she goes to the backyard, she takes a basket with her to store some stuff. When going upstairs to work she also uses the basket that she fills with some tea. The basket works because she can put it around her arm and she can use her hands to climb the stairs.

Concepts Feedback

Frog concept:

Number one. It is very functional, and she can use it for more places around the house. The downside is that it looks very industrial.

The U:

It looks simpler, which she thinks is better than the somewhat more high-tech look of the frog concept. It looks more like a regular tool and not like an aiding tool for her illness. She likes that she can turn it around to make it a table, but the downside would be that she is going to use it as a table and then it would be full of stuff, and she cannot use it anymore. The handle where she could see clear indents for her fingers looked the most comfortable. And she found it funny that the handle combined with the wheels looked like a face.

The CaneType:

It could work. It is nice that it is very compact, and that you can store it easily. Because it is very simple and compact, she could imagine herself having more than just one of these poles. So, they could stand in multiple places in her home. And she really liked the spring-based platform where she can put her legs on to have a little help in getting up, since that is the hardest part.

The Tree:

Least favorite concept. It would need to much strength from her arms, so she doesn’t see herself using that.

Key Takeaways

  • She favors the "Frog" crank device for its practicality, compact design, and ease of use.

  • The "U" shaped support device is a close second due to its dual functionality and discreet appearance.

  • She prefers designs that prioritize lower heights for easier ground-to-seat transitions and appreciates the use of golden-yellow accents for aesthetics.

  • Portability, durability, and minimal effort are essential considerations.

  • Cane support: between 100 – 120 cm tall, so she can go to standing position

  • U: easily portable/foldable, working depends on weight, extra step not necessary (only if you have/create extra space), handle shapes look nice

  • U and Frog: seats at a heigh of 50-55 cm

  • Frog: Lowest height setting 30 – 40 cm from the ground. Should be as low as possible.

  • Tree: too much arms' strength if used alone, could be added to other concepts

  • The table height (1 metre) would be a good height to pull herself up.

  • Linda is around 1.70 meter

  • The wheels need to be a bit larger so it can go over some bumps around the house
